Welcome. You've taken a meaningful step just by being here, and that says so much about how much you care about your family. Parenting brings a mix of hope and worry, pride and self-doubt. Most of us wonder, Am I doing enough? Does my child feel truly connected to me? These questions are normal. They come from your deep desire to do right by your kids.
It's easy to get caught up in chasing the idea of perfect parenting, especially when every book, podcast, or social media post seems to set a new standard. But here's a secret: your child doesn't need perfect. What helps most is honest, real connection. Secure attachment is about showing up for your child, even in small, imperfect ways. This scorecard is here to help you see where your strengths already shine and where gentle shifts can create deeper connection and peace of mind. Progress, not perfection, is what truly matters.
What is secure attachment? In simple terms, it's the deep sense your child has that you are their safe place, the one who truly sees them, soothes them when life gets hard, and helps them feel secure enough to step into the world with confidence. Research shows that secure attachment is the foundation for a child's emotional regulation, resilience, and mental well-being. Kids who feel securely attached are more likely to handle stress, build strong relationships, and avoid many struggles down the road.
Think of the 4 S's as building blocks of connection:
This framework is rooted in science but also in everyday life. Maybe you've read conflicting advice or felt worried that you'll mess things up. Maybe you long for a closer bond but aren't sure how to get there. You're not alone. Every parent holds these questions, and every parent can grow in small steps.
What does "secure attachment" mean to you? When was the last time you noticed your child seeking comfort or connection from you?
For each scenario, rate yourself from 1 to 5. Be honest and gentle with yourself. This isn't about getting a perfect score. It's about noticing patterns, without judgment.
1 = Rarely True • 2 = Sometimes True • 3 = Occasionally True • 4 = Often True • 5 = Almost Always True

Each area is scored out of 15. Start with what's going well. Every parent has strengths, and they're the roots of your family's resilience.
How do your own emotions influence your responses to your child? Where do you notice ease? Where do you feel stuck? Jot down one small thing you'd like to try this week.
Parenting for secure attachment isn't about getting it right every time. It's about showing up, repairing, and growing together. Each caring effort you make, no matter how small, helps your child feel seen, safe, and loved. Over time, these moments build resilience, prevent struggles, and ripple out into your wider community.
Consider sharing what you're learning with a friend or partner. Notice how your own self-awareness shapes your child's sense of safety. Every time you choose presence over perfection, you're leading by example, not just for your family, but for all the families you touch.
Remember, progress matters more than perfection. You're building something lasting, one honest moment at a time. Your commitment to your own growth is the greatest gift you can offer your child.
